In Florida, features that help a house resist wind can earn credits on a home insurance policy. A wind mitigation inspection documents them.
What it is
A qualified inspector records features such as roof shape, roof-to-wall connections, roof deck attachment, opening protection and secondary water resistance, and completes a standard form for your insurer.
Roof features that count
Hip roofs generally perform better under uplift than gable roofs. Deck attachment and a sealed roof deck as secondary water resistance can also affect the assessment.
What a new roof can change
A new roof installed to current code with proper deck attachment can improve the roof items on the form. Ask your contractor how your roof deck is fastened.
How credits work
The carrier sets the credit. The form only documents the features, so ask your agent how the discount applies to your policy.
When to get one
After a roof replacement or other wind-related upgrades, so the new features are on record.
