What to do after roof storm damage

2 min read

After a storm the first hours decide whether damage stays contained. The steps below limit further damage and protect an insurance claim.

Stay safe first

Do not climb onto a wet or storm-damaged roof. Decking can be weak, and downed lines or debris are real hazards. Most damage can be assessed from the ground.

Document everything

Take dated photos and video of the roof, ceilings, walls and any debris, from the ground and from inside the house. Keep damaged materials until the adjuster has seen them.

Stop more water getting in

If the roof is open, emergency tarping or dry-in stops further damage. Keep receipts for temporary repairs; carriers usually expect you to take reasonable steps to protect the property. We tarp on the first visit when a roof is open.

Call your insurer and a roofer

Report the claim promptly and ask what your policy requires. A roofing contractor can inspect and write up the damage so the claim reflects what is actually wrong.

Watch for pressure to sign quickly

Be wary of anyone who asks you to sign over your claim or pay a large amount upfront. Check the license and ask for everything in writing.

Common questions

Will a temporary tarp hurt my claim?
No. Protecting the property from further damage is generally expected. Keep the receipts and photos.
