How to prepare for a roof replacement

2 min read

Knowing what happens on replacement day makes the job far less stressful. Most replacements follow the same sequence.

Before the crew arrives

Move vehicles out of the driveway and away from the house, clear patio items and anything hanging on walls under the roofline, and let neighbors know about the noise.

Tear-off

Old roofing is stripped to the deck, which is inspected. Rotted or damaged decking is repaired, and the roof is dried in so it is protected the same day.

Installation

Underlayment, flashing and the new roof system go on to the manufacturer specifications. Vents and penetrations are detailed and sealed.

Daily protection and cleanup

A roof that is open at the end of the day or when weather turns gets dried in or tarped. The crew sweeps the yard with a magnetic sweeper and clears debris before leaving.

Final walkthrough and warranty

The foreman walks the finished roof with you, and the permit inspection follows. Warranty details are given in writing.

Common questions

How long does a replacement take?
Most single-family shingle replacements finish in one to two days; tile, metal and flat roofs take longer depending on size and complexity.
Do I have to be home?
Not for the whole job, but it helps to be reachable and to meet the foreman at the start and at the end.
