Florida attics get extremely hot. Ventilation helps move that heat and moisture out, protecting the roof structure and the shingles.
Why ventilation matters
Trapped heat and humidity age shingles from underneath, can contribute to mold and make the house harder to cool.
Intake and exhaust
Balanced ventilation needs air coming in at the eaves and leaving near the ridge. Exhaust without intake does little.
Types of vents
Ridge vents, box or static vents, turbine vents and powered attic fans. Which fits depends on the roof shape and the attic.
Installed properly
Vents are penetrations, so they need correct flashing and sealing to avoid leaks. Checking the vents is part of every replacement.
Signs of poor ventilation
Very hot upper floors, curling shingles, condensation or a musty smell in the attic, and high cooling bills.
